Facials, what are they?

Well, it can be as simple as a thorough cleansing, exfoliation and hydration with good quality products, or it can be much more comprehensive using many different pieces of equipment, like microdermabrasion, microcurrent , LED lights, skin needling devices or skin scrubbers. Facials may be done occasionally or every week depending on your age and condition of your skin. Many clients truly want to reverse aging issues and that does require on-going treatments. Some estheticians are more into skin “therapies” which are working to improve skin conditions as opposed to a “feel good, fluff” facial.
Truly a facial should be about the health of the skin, feeding and nourishing it with what it needs to thrive in our harsh environment.
So why is a facial expensive, you ask?
Well, if your esthetician is a sole proprietor, take a look around. Does she have a facial bed, furnishings, such as lamps, furniture, drapes? What about spa wraps or robes and head wraps? Supplies like cotton pads, q-tips, sheets and towels? Professional products for customizing your facial and what about equipment? Now that is the real cost! My equipment costs were anywhere from $1000 – $8,000 for one piece and just one of my professional products costs over $200. So if I am using 6-8 different products in my facial plus 2 or 3 different pieces of equipment, my cost just to do one facial could be significant. And what about the space where I am working? Some estheticians have one room, others may have multiple rooms which are usually rented. So I think you can see why that facial may cost what it does. Your esthetician has to be fully committed to be able to provide you with what you need.
Many estheticians have priced their services individually but provide a package price when combining several modalities to give the client a more affordable price on their service. What about product samples? When I give a client a product sample, that sample may costs $20 or more, depending on the sample size. Plus, what about time? When you consider that most facials are 45 minutes to 1-1/2 hours, facials may be the best thing on the planet!
I hope this helps you to understand facials and how they may be priced. Looking your best may actually be a bargain when you consider that your face is the first impression you make and the last thing that people remember about you.
